The Ocean Connectors Program is an interdisciplinary education project of The Ocean Foundation that links underprivileged students in the US and Mexico to enrich school curriculums and promote an early interest in environmental issues. This program benefits coastal communities and increases environmental awareness by offering valuable marine science lessons to low-income schools for free. Ocean Connectors uses migratory marine species that are found locally, such as the endangered green sea turtle and the California gray whale, as case studies to teach environmental stewardship to students in San Diego, California and Baja California Sur, Mexico. Through this program, some of the region's most disadvantaged students receive rare educational opportunities, such as class presentations by guest speakers, outdoor field trips, and binational letter writing exchanges. Ocean Connectors students in California and Mexico exchange pen-pal letters, which serves the important purpose of illustrating the interconnectedness of oceans and demonstrating that humans must unite internationally for the sake of protecting migratory sea life. Ocean Connectors is a unique program that incorporates hands-on environmental science activities, reading, writing, art, culture, geography, and language studies into conservation lessons to improve school curriculums. Students, teachers, parents, and volunteers are inspired to adopt sustainable lifestyle practices as a result of Ocean Connectors.
