OCASA Speakers Series A Conversation with Don Perata October 1, 2010 Youth Violence: Moderator Maya Dillard Smith -- Strategy & Investment Consultant, YP&O Committee Topic: Prevent and reduce violence, crime, and gang involvement among children and youth through case management, physical and behavioral health services, internships, work experience, outdoor education, and leadership development, including civic engagement, service-learning, and arts expression. Questions: • Measure Y created about a million annual investment in violence prevention programs in Oakland. Over that time, violence in Oakland has been on the decline, but is quickly ticking back up. So much of the recent discussion about Measure Y has focused on restoring officers, but how can the City ensure that the important public safety improvements that have already been made through Measure Y to prevent youth violence are continued as the city grapples with its budget realties? • Violence in route to, from and on Oakland public school campuses is growing. What strategies can the city employ in partnership with OUSD to maintain a positive school climate where teachers can teach and students can learn? • Gun violence is commonplace in many of Oakland's flatland communities at the hands of youth and young adults. What can the city do to curtail the availability and use of guns in our community?
